Winn-Dixie District Director Cheikh Mboup recently found a way to combine his passion for the Jacksonville community while honoring a living icon of American history.

On Oct. 2, Mboup and Winn-Dixie sponsored the 75thbirthday celebration of women’s rights icon Dorothy Pittman Hughes. Renowned feminist activist Gloria Steinem, a close friend to Pittman Hughes, attended the fundraiser to help Jacksonville’s impoverished.

Ms. Pittman Hughes, a Jacksonville resident, is the founder of the Charles Junction Historical Preservation Society, whose vision is to bring agricultural and economic independence to urban communities in Jacksonville. The organization seeks to create an atmosphere of hope in an area of poverty and lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The project’s 23-acre community garden aims to create new jobs, educational programs and entrepreneurial opportunities for self-reliance while providing playgrounds for the area’s children.

“This event brought together so many different parts of our community from influential activists to business leaders,” said Mboup. “The community gardens make up such a unique opportunity for everyone to get involved. I am delighted to have been provided the chance to learn more about what these women have done and how we all can be a beacon of change for the future.”
