For the past seven years, BI-LO has partnered with Keystone Prevention, the substance abuse prevention authority in York County, S.C., to put on Cool Fest, an annual event drawing thousands. Challenged with a smaller venue space for this year’s event, Keystone re-introduced the event as Summer Safety Fest, a day dedicated to educating youth about safety.

BI-LO store No. 5640 in Pineville, N.C., was there to support the inaugural event, continuing its eight-year community partnership with Keystone. To ensure the new Fest would be just as successful as its predecessor, BI-LO donated $1,500.

Associates also made sure BI-LO had a presence at the Fest by running a vendor table featuring free items for guests, including chips, coloring books, crayons, cutting boards, Frisbees and koozies. One lucky attendee won a $100 BI-LO gift card.

“It’s important to be a part of the communities where we operate,” said Jennifer Werner, store director of BI-LO store No. 5640. “This event allowed us to do two very significant things: to build on our longstanding relationship with Keystone and to facilitate the well-being of families in the area.”

Other vendors, such as Rock Hill’s police and fire departments, gave important safety education lessons, offered interactive alcohol, drug and fire safety activities and gave away bicycle helmets, hand sanitizer and more.

The first Summer Safety Fest was a bigger success than expected, with more than 2,000 people in attendance. BI-LO anticipates an even greater turnout next year. Organizers expect CoolFest to return in 2015 and that the safety and community efforts will continue.
