Associates from BI-LO store No. 5421 in Asheville, North Carolina, were up bright and early Sept. 13 to cheer on participants for the third annual Asheville Duathlon, 10K Trail Run and Kids Duathlon, all held at the world famous Biltmore Estate.

The unique multi-sport event took teams of two to three on a 5-kilometer road run, 12-mile off-road bike leg and a final 5-kilometer packed dirt foot race through the historic estate that includes a game-stocked forest, working vineyards and a cold mountain river.

In addition, the inaugural 40- and 60-mile Gravel Grinder Bike Race took participants through both paved and gravel paths throughout the estate’s carriage roads – a real treat for cyclists who are normally denied access to ride in front of the actual Biltmore House.

After cheering on local athletes, BI-LO associates refueled and hydrated the thousands of participants and spectators in attendance, distributing cold bottled water and fresh fruit. Kids in attendance interacted with BI-LO mascot Sue Berry, requesting hugs and pictures throughout the day.

This year’s event benefitted FEAST Asheville, a local cooking and garden education program that promotes healthy eating choices and makes them accessible to people of all income levels through hands-on cooking and garden education. The program encourages and empowers participants by teaching skills needed to make fresh, wholesome and tasty foods.

“Our team always enjoys participating in these local events where we can interact with our customers outside the store and show our commitment to the community,” said Cole Cantrell, director of BI-Lo store No. 5421. “Customers always stop by the store to thank us for BI-LO’s continued support.”
