Winn-Dixie store No. 509 Director Mark Hamilton found recently the truth in the idea that when you take interest in your community, the community takes interest in you.

Recognizing what the store means to the community of Chelsea, Ala., the town’s mayor and members of its city council personally asked Hamilton to serve on the Executive Board for the Chelsea Business Alliance.

The newly-created Chelsea Business Alliance has a mission to serve as an overall communications bridge between local businesses and the city. Hamilton will work with other executive board members to plan for future business development. The City of Chelsea is one of the fastest-growing communities in Shelby County, with more than 240 percent population growth in the last decade.

The executive board is tasked with creating marketing campaigns that promote the city. Collectively, the executive board has the resources to promote businesses throughout Chelsea.

“As a business leader and resident of Chelsea, I felt that it was not only an honor to serve, but also my civic duty,” Hamilton said. “Winn-Dixie has been a member of the Chelsea community for years and as a member of the executive board, I can give Winn-Dixie a powerful voice when decisions are made about future business growth in the city.”

Mr. Hamilton is no stranger to the Chelsea community. In March, he worked to raise more than $2,700 for the Hope for Gabe Foundation, an organization that raises funds and awareness for a local 6-year-old battling a rare disease. While not at his store, Mr. Hamilton can be found at local middle and high school games, cheering on the Chelsea Fighting Hornets.

"Chelsea is a close knit family- friendly communityand I’m extremely excited about this opportunity to help the city and its local businesses grow. The next two years will be two of the most pivotal years in this city's history,” he said.
