Winn-Dixie recently helped hundreds of customers celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, with several holiday-inspired activities. By partnering with Jewish community organizations and highlighting Winn-Dixie’s ready-made Rosh Hashanah family dinners, Winn-Dixie associates throughout the Miami, Orlando, Florida and Jacksonville, Florida regions were able to help shoppers jump start a sweet New Year.

In preparation of the High Holidays, Winn-Dixie store No. 291 in Aventura, Fla. joined the Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank and Scheck Hillel Community School on Aug. 19 during the first day of school. As a mitzvah, or good deed, students personally decorated Winn-Dixie paper grocery bags that were distributed to local synagogues, filled with kosher food items and returned to the kosher food bank for the High Holidays. The store’s partnerships continued with the third Annual Kids for Kosher Food Bank scavenger hunt Sept. 21, as families combed the aisles for kosher items throughout the store. By the end of the event, 55 families contributed more than $6,000 in kosher food that was donated to the food bank just in time for Rosh Hashanah.

Families visited Winn-Dixie store No. 326 in Tamarac, Fla. Sept. 14 for a hands-on “Challahpalooza” family celebration in partnership with Chabad of Tamarac. Store Director Anthony Ordonez welcomed more than 200 attendees as Chabad of Tamarac’s Rabbi Engel guided families through making their own ready-to-bake Challah, a Jewish bread and staple in Rosh Hashanah meals. Attendees also enjoyed holiday-themed craft making and interactive storytelling throughout the afternoon.

To help shoppers who sought to spend less time in the kitchen during the holidays, Winn-Dixie store No. 2266 in Fern Park, Fla., No. 2215 in Orlando, Fla. and No. 190 in Jacksonville, Fla. invited customers to enjoy samples of Winn-Dixie’s prepared kosher meal offerings during ‘Taste of Rosh Hashanah’ events on Sept. 16. As part of the celebrations, the stores highlighted Winn-Dixie’s prepared kosher meal options, including beef brisket, apricot chicken and an assortment of kugels.

“From our partnerships with community organizations to our more than 1,000 kosher everyday essentials in our stores, we are proud to support our Jewish customers during the High Holidays,” said Winn-Dixie Category Manager of Kosher and Ethnic Foods Ahron Scharman. “I would like to thank all of the associates who helped their customers have a sweet and memorable Rosh Hashanah.”
