A simple act of kindness can go a long way, and the associates of BI-LO store no. 5413 in Charlotte, N.C. proved just that after striking up a conversation with a regular customer.

Sharon Nelson was shopping at the store on Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road when a BI-LO associate questioned a shirt she was wearing that read, “Trust Your Struggle.” The associate that the slogan was for an organization Nelson founded after a battle with breast cancer that began with a diagnosis at 29.

The mission of her organization is to give back to others in the community who are going through a similar struggle. Each month, Nelson visits the local oncology clinic to bring fresh fruit and muffins to patients undergoing chemotherapy. Taste changes are a common side effect of chemotherapy, with about half of patients experiencing noticeable changes to taste buds.

BI-LO associates were so moved by her story and knew they wanted to help. They gave Nelson four bunches of bananas to bring to the patients. In addition, Assistant Store Director Lisa Small gave Nelson a $20 BI-LO gift card to use at her next visit to the oncology clinic.

Nelson quickly took to her social media page to praise BI-LO, “Thank you to the great folks at #BiLo for donating the cases of bananas to TYS as we served my friends at my oncology clinic. #TrustYourStruggle,” it read.

Small said the store plans to continue supporting Nelson and the Trust Your Struggle organization. “Cancer is a horrible disease that affects the lives of so many around us. We were happy to support Sharon and her mission to bring comfort and strength to those undergoing chemotherapy in our local community,” she said.
