Hunger is a prominent concern in America, where one in four children live in food-insecure households. Food is Winn-Dixie’s business, and helping to provide food to those who aren’t able to afford it is part of being a community leader.
Winn-Dixie store No. 657 in Sarasota, Florida donated 500 paper bags to help Temple Beth Sholom’s food drive. More than 170 bags loaded full of groceries were donated to All Faiths Food Bank and Kosher Food Pantry at Jewish Family and Children's Services.
“Our store strives to be active in the community whether it’s through donations or inviting our locals into the store,” said Dale Root, Winn-Dixie store No. 657 director. “It felt good to help a great organization such as Temple Beth Sholom with their food drive.”
The groceries were collected from Temple Beth Sholom’s congregation between the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
“This is part of a Jewish tradition known as Tikkun Olam, which translates to ‘heal the world,’” said Joel Servetz, Temple Beth Sholom’s vice president of social and community affairs. “Basically, our duty as humans is to reach out and help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.”
