Winn-Dixie store No. 525 director Malcolm Vickery was welcomed to his new post with an article in the Anniston (Ala.) Star.

You never know where a conversation in a grocery store can lead. This was recently the case for Malcolm Vickery , new director of Winn-Dixie store No. 525 in Jacksonville, Ala.

Vickery took the reins of the store Sept. 23, and happened to strike up a friendly conversation with a shopper who turned out to be a reporter for the Anniston Star, a local daily newspaper.

“She noticedthat I was new to the store and said she was with the local paper and asked if she could write a piece on me,” he said.

The reporter was Margaret Anderson and the Anniston Star serves eastern Alabama. The story was published Oct. 23 and introduces Vickery to the Jacksonville and Anniston community as the new area Winn-Dixie store director.

Vickery has been in the grocery business for more than 35 years, coming to Winn-Dixie in Jacksonville, Ala. from another retailer in Madison, Ala. He also grew up in the grocery business -- it was his father’s lifetime career and was so ingrained in his family that his brother and sister also chose a career in the same field.

In the article, Vickery is quoted saying he is adjusting to his new position well and loves meeting the customers in Jacksonville, inviting everyone to come to the store to say “hello.” Since the time the story was published, Vickery said he has had at least 25-30 people stop him to say they read the article and to welcome him.

“Jacksonville and Anniston are both close-knit communities with a lot of friendly people. I am excited to be here and to serve them in any way that I can,” Vickery said.

Vickery and his wife, Jackie, have two daughters and five grandsons. When he’s not working, he enjoys playing golf and keeping up with the New Orleans Saints.
