The Jacksonville region’s district 5 joins together to show support for MS.

Winn-Dixie Jacksonville district 5 took time out of their day April 12 to put on their walking shoes in support of the North Florida MS Society at their annual walk MS event in Orange Park, Fla. But it wasn’t just this one event that rallied the district together to help this non-profit -- the district has a close connection to the cause because Winn-Dixie Store No. 145 director Gene Williams’ wife suffers from multiple sclerosis.

“It’s not every day that I get the chance to show her and everyone else struggling with the disease how proud of her I am for fighting this battle,” Williams said.

The district planned out a month-long strategy to raise money and form a team that will make a huge impact on the community. Williams asked the district, his Winn-Dixie family, to stand up with him for the cause and take it to the next level by asking every associate to donate one dollar from the 18 stores in the district.

Store No. 25 Director Jennifer Rowe took on a large part of the event by organizing the team, ordering T-shirts, food, and helping to secure vendor donations. On the day of the event, the district met at the walk early in the morning to join together as a team. The team also participated in the event by handing out free donuts to walkers at the Winn-Dixie tent before the race.

Once the walk started, the associates were off walking for a cure for MS as Winn-Dixie chef Eddie prepared hotdogs and hamburgers for everyone at the walk.

“It was great that we were able to provide food-- to not only our team, but everyone who was at the walk!” Rowe said.

After the race, the Winn-Dixie team was able to present the North Florida MS Society with a cash donation of $1,500 that was collected from more than 1,000 employees in the Jacksonville area.

“I am so thankful for my Winn-Dixie family for supporting me with this cause that affects my family every day,” said Williams.
