Bi-Lo Holdings IT Manager of Store Systems Frank Puzzini says he’s glad he chose to join the Coast Guard Reserves 11 years ago and that he’s especially thankful that Bi-Lo Holdings is so supportive of him as his military and civilian careers develop side-by-side.

“I’ve had outstanding support from Bi-Lo Holdings through long hours and long days,” he said. “My immediate supervisors, Jim Ranne and Sandy Merry, have given me the flexibility and outstanding support to do both my Coast Guard training that benefits my Coast Guard experience and Bi-Lo Holdings.”

He’s been with the United States Coast Guard Reserve since 2002 and with Bi-Lo Holdings and Winn-Dixie since 2011. Previously he worked in Atlanta with Ecolab Inc. While there, he worked with the Coast Guard Reserve out of Sector Charleston (S.C.) and Sector Jacksonville (Fla.).

On July 1, Puzzini’s Coast Guard career took a step forward as his family participated in his Coast Guard promotion ceremony. His children put on his new shoulder boards, indicating his change in rank from lieutenant to lieutenant commander. “It was a very exciting day,” he said.

With his promotion comes another change – he’ll be reporting to U.S. Southern Command in Miami, but he’ll be able to continue to stay in Jacksonville, working for Bi-Lo Holdings.

The experience he gains at Bi-Lo Holdings and the Coast Guard benefits both jobs, he said. Puzzini said he chose the Coast Guard because of the diversity in the work that members of the military branch do.

“It could be pollution one day, search and rescue another day and a national security issue the next,” he said.

For his first six years, he was involved in Homeland Security and national defense. Lately, he’s worked on contingency plans to support emergency responders. With his promotion, he’ll be working in operations and international business partnerships, he said.
