“Minions,” like those made famous in the animated movie “Despicable Me” appeared recently in the Orlando (Fla.) Fashion Square Mall – but there was something different about them. Closer inspection revealed that they were made entirely of canned foods.

Orlando is a chartered city of the national organization, “Canstruction,” a unique charity that hosts competitions, exhibitions and events displaying colossal structures made entirely out of full cans of food.

After the Canstruction structures are built, the creations go on display to the public as a giant art exhibition. At the end of the event, all food is donated to local hunger relief organizations such as Second Harvest of Central Florida.

Winn-Dixie store No. 2390 and Store Director Tommy Magee supported this cause by donating gift cards to the competition team to help them obtain their building materials. The team included project “architects” who spent months planning, researching, buying and building to create this beautiful display.

“Canstruction is an event that we look forward to every year,” said Carol Perez, Orlando Canstruction Vice-Chair. “It’s a special time of year that architects get to have fun planning creative works of art that in turn get donated to a wonderful organization, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Perez and her team participate in this competition every year, she said. They look for specific labels that can be used to make their plans come to life. This year Perez’s teams hard work paid off with three local awards. The team received an award for signage, the Second Harvest of Central Florida special award, and “best use of labels.” The team will next compete on the national level.
