The second annual Hub City Hog Fest kicked off in downtown Spartanburg, S.C. March 28 for a two-day barbecue festival and contest to benefit the non-profit organization Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, S.C.

Some 50 barbecue teams came in from Arkansas, South Carolina, and North Carolina to compete in this outstanding cook-off competition sponsored by BI-LO.

On Friday morning, competing barbecue teams gathered at their stations and received 5-10 Boston butts and 3-5 racks of baby back ribs courtesy of BI-LO. The teams worked for hours, cooking the meats and making sure their special recipes were perfect as the aroma of the delicious food filled the air.

BI-LO store No. 5519 participated with an official BI-LO event tent offering free chicken wings fresh off the grill, Chek soda, sweet dream cookies, and free face painting by BI-LO associate Pam Ogle.

“This festival attracts over 7,500 people to Spartanburg and is a great community event for our area,” BI-LO Store Director Sandra Milyo said. “Our BI-LO tent was a huge success at the event; we had people lined up to try our wings and cookies!”

On Friday night, the competition began with a “wing-off” and a sauce competition and bands played on the main stage until midnight while attendees danced. On Saturday, attendees again enjoyed sampling competitors’ food, but then it was time for the big competition with the winner taking home $1,250!

BI-LO donated a total of 5,000 pounds of meat to the festival, which raised thousands of dollars for Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, S.C. The organization is dedicated to providing nutritious meals, services, and fellowship to the frail and homebound citizens in SpartanburgCounty.
