On Dec. 20, Carolinas’ best high school football players went head to head in the 78thShrine Bowl, the oldest all-star high school football game in the nation. South Carolina claimed victory with a score of 21-12, earning bragging rights to the coveted title for a third consecutive year.

BI-LO has been a longstanding sponsor of the state-versus-state rivalry game, which is a key fixture in the Carolinas and contributes to larger cause.

Through the efforts of five local Shrine Temples and the contributions of fans and sponsors such as BI-LO, the 78thShrine Bowl raised more than $1.5 million and has garnered more than $75 million since its inaugural game in support of the Greenville Shriners Hospital for Children, as well as 21 other Shriners Hospitals throughout the country. The hospital’s mission is to provide the highest quality care to children with special health care needs and conduct research that improves quality of care and quality of life.

“This is a true community event with a very storied history that means something to football fans in the Carolinas,” said Justin Simpson, event organizer. “The ultimate beneficiaries are the children impacted by the care provided by the hospital.”

This year’s game took place at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BI-LO’s presence was seen on the jumbotron, in signage throughout the stadium and on branded Koozies distributed to fans. BI-LO also received recognition from sports announcers who gave thanks to BI-LO over the public-address system.

“BI-LO’s financial investment in this game allows for an enhanced player and fan experience, while helping raise funds for the Greenville Shriners Hospital,” said Simpson. “BI-LO’s support also helps place this all-star classic in front of a national audience on ESPNU and ESPN3.”

“The Shrine Bowl is exactly the type of partnership we strive to be a part of,” said Alex Clever store director at BI-LO store no. 5089. “The event provides an action-packed night for sports fan and shines the light on student athletes who’ve worked hard to rise to the top. And to top it off, the event gives back to a worthy and impactful cause.”
