BI-LO store No. 5603 was the official grocer of the 68thannual Henderson Apple Festival held during Labor Day weekend in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Apples are one of the leading agricultural crops in the state, and more than 200 area growers produce 65 percent of North Carolina’s apple harvest in Henderson County.

The festival has been Western North Carolina’s most anticipated family festival for years and community members from Asheville, North Carolina; Brevard, North Carolina; Greenville, South Carolina and Spartanburg, South Carolina look forward to four days of street fair fun including arts and crafts, delicious food and entertainment at the Historic Courthouse located on Hendersonville’s Main Street.

Associates from BI-LO store No. 5603 joined local apple growers and other vendors in selling a variety of treats, including muffins, chocolate chip cookies, cotton candy, fruit cups, lemonade and sweet tea. To keep with the theme of the event, the store also had candy apples available, selling 179 through the weekend.

“Growing apples has been part of Henderson County’s culture and heritage since the mid-1700’s, said Leigh Youngblood, store director. “It was important for us to have a presence at the festival to show our commitment to the Henderson community and our local apple growers.”

During a normal year, apples bring in an average income of $22 million dollars to Henderson County.
