The Ronald McDonald House of Greater Chattanooga’s Adopt-A-Meal program, allows volunteers to make home cooked meals each day for the 26 families living in the house.
The Thanksgiving holiday is a joyous time for many families, but it doesn’t come easy for some. And due to a last-minute collapse in volunteer staffing this year, it nearly didn’t become a reality for families currently living at the Ronald McDonald House in Chattnooga, Tenn.
But soon after area BI-LO representatives heard about the situation, help was on its way.
The Ronald McDonald House organization of Greater Chattanooga provides a home away from home for families whose seriously ill or injured children are being treated at the nearby Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. Through the organization’s Adopt-A-Meal program, volunteers make a home cooked meal for the 26 families who stay at the house each day. But when a volunteer group had to cancel at the last minute on Nov. 29, BI-LO stepped up to the plate to provide salad, drinks and dessert to accompany donated pizzas.
Families in crisis always need to be reminded to eat, and the program meets that need, as well as giving the families the opportunity to support and encourage each other.
“When you have a sick child, the last thing on your mind is what you are going to eat for dinner,” said Daryl Massey, BI-LO district director. “We are proud to support an organization that brings comfort and a little piece of home to the families in our community.”
The Bi-Lo Holdings Foundation has been helping to support the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Chattanooga since 1998.
