More than 700 Red Cross volunteers served up 6,000 meals in coastal South Carolina for the 25thAnnual American Red Cross Christmas Day Dinner – all free of charge to grateful recipients, thanks to the significant support of BI-LO.

The Christmas Day Dinner, at several coastal South Carolina locations, provides a warm meal for those who might otherwise go without. Nearly half of the dinners were delivered to homebound people and the rest were served at a sit-down gathering for those in need of food and fellowship on Christmas.

Following Hurricane Hugo’s devastating impact in Charleston, S.C. in 1989, the community recognized a need to provide food and camaraderie to those in need. Those efforts led to the Red Cross-sponsored Christmas Day Dinner.

As presenting sponsor of the dinner since 2008, BI-LO has helped provide nearly 30,000 meals to those in need in coastal South Carolina. This year alone, donations for the meal included 6,600 pounds of turkey, 2,100 pounds of yams, 108 pounds of marshmallows, 950 pounds of bread, 2,400 pounds of stuffing, 2,000 pounds of green beans, 350 pounds of onions and 1,400 pounds of cranberry sauce.

“This was our 25thanniversary of providing the largest Christmas Day Dinner in the state of South Carolina, and it would not have been possible the last five years if not for our friends at BI-LO,” said Nanci Conley, executive director of the American Red Cross, Coastal South Carolina Chapter. “Thank you is just not enough for all that BI-LO does for us and those we serve.”
