The sun was barely peeking through the clouds in Asheville, N.C., and already more than 200 racers were lined up ready to start the highly-anticipated Asheville Triathlon.

Held every July at the Asheville Recreation Park, the event attracts area athletes of all levels and abilities, from novice to elite. The race kicked off with a 400-meter swim at the park’s outdoor pool with a time-trial start allowing the fastest swimmers to start first.

After exiting the pool, racers transitioned to an 11.6-mile bike course which featured rolling, challenging hills, giving racers a ride one might expect when riding through the mountains of Asheville, N.C.

Participants closed out the race after returning to Asheville Recreation Park for a 5K run. After crossing the finish line, racers refueled with breakfast items donated by BI-LO store No. 5217 in Asheville, N.C., including fresh fruit, granola bars, pretzels and sports drinks.

“The Asheville Triathalon is a highly anticipated event in the Asheville community, and it was important for us to provide food items for local racers,” said Bobby McCall, store No. 5217 director. “We congratulate all of the participants on their accomplishment.”
