Tampa Donations 500px
Winn-Dixie No. 2525 Director Gina Williamson (left) chose to donate her store’s left over Halloween candy to Nations Associations Charities.

Holiday-themed candy and other items are festive to during holiday seasons, but the discounted leftovers that aren’t bought are often in danger of being lost to shrinkage.

Tampa region Winn-Dixie stores took the initiative to donate the excess product to an organization or school of choice, rather than discard food and school supplies that may be valuable to others in the community.

District Director Mark McLin said all 15 of his stores participated in the grassroots donation initiative. The store directors at each Winn-Dixie selected an organization or school to receive the product.

“These donations are extremely local,” said McLin. “Many of them went to schools and organizations just a few blocks from the respective stores.”

Other stores that participated in the donation included:

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 640 in Dunedin donated excess holiday items to Clearwater Community Church.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 655 in New Port Richey donated food items to Marchman Technical Education Center for its holiday food drive and nonfood items to Gulfside Hospice Thrift Store.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 672 in New Port Richey donated to Faith United Methodist Church.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 710 in Hudson donated product to Second Harvest.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 711 in Spring Hill donated school supplies to Westside Elementary School.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 751 in Immokalee gave excess product to a local school.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 2456 in Largo gave items to Mildred Helms Elementary School.

·                    Winn-Dixie No. 2531 in Tarpon Springs participated as well.

“We value the communities we serve and we want to give back in any way we can,” said McLin.
