BI-LO associates brave the bridge during the walk with the other 5,000 walkers.​

BI-LO Store Directors and Associates gathered in Columbia, S.C. for the fourth year to participate in the Midlands American Heart Association Heart Walk.

With Heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 cause of death in South Carolina, BI-LO associates have taken action to raise awareness and funds. The American Heart Association is a national nonprofit aiming to build healthier lives in the communities we live in and reduce the incidents of coronary heart disease and strokes.

BI-LO also sponsored the event, and BI-LO associates handed out pedometers, flying disc toys, chip clips, Walter’s pals stickers, and more to 5,000 walkers before and after the walk. Associates also distributed free bananas and bottled water to keep walkers energized as they passed the halfway mark at the BI-LO store in Cayce, S.C.

“With so many people affected by heart disease and stroke, events like this are wonderful to bring awareness, funds, and research to the community,” said BI-LO Store No. 5442 Director Mike Dorroh. “It’s also important as a community partner to help organizations like the American Heart Association reach out to the community and educate them on this life-threatening disease.”

Dorrah was also responsible for rallying the Columbia district for this wonderful event and was able to present a $30,000 check to the Midlands American Heart Association at the walk. The money was recently raised through customer donations at the store.

“It was a great event and we all look forward to participating for the fifth year!” Dorrah said.
