High school students in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia recently had the opportunity to learn the inner workings of a grocery store and other valuable business lessons with help from BI-LO associates.

On March 20, store No. 5673 in Ooltewah, Tennessee partnered with Junior Achievement to host students from East Hamilton High School through the organization’s job shadow program. The program gives local high school students the opportunity to visit a professional work environment, providing insight into how to find and keep a fulfilling career. Students understand the importance of researching the requirements needed to earn a position and develop job-hunting tools such as networking, resumes, and interviewing skills.

Store No. 5673 Director Eddie Vaughn provided a 15-minute tour of each department, discussing the various career paths within the grocery industry.

“We helped students understand all opportunities within the grocery industry, from baggers and meat cutters at the store level, to field representatives, construction, marketing and IT professionals at the corporate level,” said Vaughn.

The class also learned from Pharmacy District Manager Bob Ault about exciting opportunities within the pharmacy department and the education needed to become a pharmacist.

In Northwest Georgia, store No. 5349 director Bill Abline participated in the Catoosa County Rising Professionals event. BI-LO helped to plan and coordinate the event, in which 185 high school students from across the county participated in sessions including interviewing skills and resumes, goal-setting and time management, dressing for success, managing income and business etiquette.

“We enjoyed speaking to the students about the grocery industry, specifically the numerous positions and growth opportunities we have at BI-LO,” said Abline. “I think all of the students left with a newly-found excitement about entering the world of business.”
