Winn-Dixie store No. 336 Store Director Fran Hernandez’s daughter and Winn-Dixie store No. 311 associate, Oliva Hernandez, with Jamaican Olympian runner Johan Blake at the 8th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Hunger.​

On Nov. 2, a team from Winn-Dixie store No. 336 in Hollywood, Fla. joined more than 800 South Florida residents in helping to eliminate hunger by participating in the Food for the Poor during the 8thAnnual Walk/Run for Hunger.

The store sponsored a breakfast for participants before the race and store associates Tiffany Engel, Nicole Cosgrove, Tim Cosgrove, Neisha Williams, along with store No. 311 associate Olivia Hernandez, participated.

Before the race began, the Winn-Dixie team distributed bananas, bagels, pastries and granola bars. But everyone needed a boost of energy to keep up with Jamaican Olympian runner Johan Blake, who also participated in the event. Store Director Fran Hernandez said the event was a proud moment for her store.

“We are thrilledto partner with an organization that is dedicated to eliminating hunger in our community,” Hernandez said. “We were able to raise awareness and funds for such a great cause while making sure every runner had the proper nutrition to make it to the finish line.”

Runners who raised $250 or more for the event were automatically entered to win a Winn-Dixie shopping spree. When the winner was chosen, she announced she would be donate the spree back to Food for the Poor.

Event Coordinator Rachel Piering said she was thrilled to have Winn-Dixie join Food for the Poor in helping fight hunger in South Florida.

“We are so thankful for Fran and Winn-Dixie and their support of Food for the Poor,” said Piering. “With their support, we can strive for our goal to eliminate hunger here in South Florida and around the world.”
