Winning customers dashed through BI-LO stores March 3 and 10 to grab as many groceries as they could get their hands on before time was up.
BI-LO store No. 5182 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and BI-LO store No. 5603 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, worked with two of the areas’ influential newspapers, Spartanburg Herald-Journal and Hendersonville Times-News, to host inaugural “Great Grocery Grab” events in an effort to show appreciation for their communities’ continued support over the years.
The newspapers helped get word out to shoppers that they could enter the Great Grocery Grab Sweepstakes, in which six winners would have four minutes to fill carts with as much as $1,000 worth of groceries to take home free of charge. On the day of the races, participants came prepared with plans. Many headed straight for the meat department, while others started in the dairy aisle.
“You could feel a buzz in the air while the contestants prepared to make a mad dash through the stores,” said Diane McAndrew, audience development manager for the newspapers. “BI-LO was the perfect partner to help reward these loyal community members.”
In addition to customers and associates, local TV stations, including the CBS, FOX and NBC affiliates, showed support during the events, cheering on contestants as they darted through the aisles and broadcasting the news to those who weren’t able to attend the events. A few of the reporters likened the Great Grocery Grab to the high energy races featured on Supermarket Sweep, a popular television game show that aired from 2000 to 2003.
“This was such an interactive and exhilarating way for us to give back to our customers,” said Lee Hardy, store No. 5182 assistant director.
“Through this event we were able to bring smiles to our shoppers’ faces,” said Leigh Youngblood, store director at store No. 5603. “What more could you ask for?”
