The City of Tampa and the East Tampa Community hosted the first area hurricane expo this year to supplement the citywide annual hurricane expo.

After city officials found that some at-risk residents weren’t able to travel to attend the annual hurricane expo, they invited community leaders to take part in a local expo to provide those residents with vital hurricane information.

“We recognize there are some needs in the community, and it is our goal to make sure everyone is prepared,” said Oliver Greene with the Office of Emergency Management with the City of Tampa.

“The people at the local expo were appreciative of the outreach opportunity,” said Greene of the more than 250 community members who attended.

Associates from Winn-Dixie store No. 2472 in Tampa, Christopher Booth and Moyel Grasgy, told participants visiting the Winn-Dixie booth how to complete their hurricane preparedness shopping lists with Winn-Dixie products. Attendees left with fun Winn-Dixie branded giveaways and the informational ABC Action News Hurricane Guide.

“A lot of these people weren’t sure what to do in a hurricane emergency,” said Booth.

They have a better idea now thanks to community leaders, including Grasgy from Winn-Dixie, who sat on a Q&A panel answering audience questions about hurricane supplies and how businesses will respond in the event of an emergency.
