Scouting for Food 500px
The Boy Scouts have been collecting food for the needy in their areas since 1985 through local Scouting for Food collection programs. The Central Florida Council canvassed their neighborhoods Nov. 2 – Nov. 9.

Winn-Dixie is helping the Boy Scouts of America Central Florida Council with its signature service project, helping to provide food to those in need this holiday season.

Thousands of Boy Scouts in seven counties throughout Central Florida participated in “Scouting for Food” Nov.2. They canvassed their neighborhoods, placing designated bags near front doors. Instructions on the bags ask residents to place non-perishable food items in them and place them outside their door before Nov. 9.

The collected food will be distributed to those in need through the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. All the food collected stays in the Central Florida community and is distributed at no cost to food banks.

“The demand for food remains high,” said Dave Krepcho, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank. “With people out of work and many homeless families, ’Scouting for Food‘ is critical, because it replenishes the food shelves in our warehouses and brings much needed relief to thousands of families during the holiday season.”

“Scouting for Food” is the single largest food drive in Central Florida. Last year, area Boy Scouts collected more than 550,000 pounds of food, providing more than 400,000 meals. Winn-Dixie has provided the Scouts with 750,000 bags for use in the campaign and all 55 of its stores in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Volusia, Flagler and Brevard counties are acting as collection sites. Customers have the option of purchasing $5 or $10 bags of pre-prepared food, which will be directly donated to “Scouting for Food.”
