When a cause hits close to home for a lot of people, it’s easy to get a group to rally behind it. This was the case recently for District 1 Winn-Dixie stores in the Brandon- South Shore Areain the Orlando Region.

District Director Mike Rodgers wanted 100 percent participation among his stores for one event. The one that stuck out to most people was Relay for Life, an overnight walk-a-thon dedicated to raising money for the American Cancer Society.

“I told our group that we were going to pick one organization and really go after raising some money,” said Rodgers. “We all know someone who’s been touched by cancer – a family member, friend or coworker – and felt Relay for Life was the best event to get involved in.”

“It was really a team decision and unanimous among all the store directors,” said Larry Cook, Winn-Dixie No. 2475 director. “It’s a life-alternating disease, whether it’s you suffering personally, or someone you know. We felt it was a great event, a great organization to be a part of.”

Rodgers said he chose the Riverview Relay for Life because it was the most central among his stores. The Winn-Dixie team set up a tent at the event and sold water, as well as vendor-donated products including Monster energy drinks and Powerade. The more than $13,000 raised from the sold products went directly to the team’s fundraising efforts.

“This was the first event that we’ve had the entire district participate in together,” said Rogers. “This was about Winn-Dixie getting its name out in the community while raising funds for a great cause. This was a team building effort – building relationships among store associates and community members.”
