Bi-Lo Holdings associates and others squared off Jan. 31 at the Jacksonville Store Support Center in a Super “Bowl” chili cook-off that commemorated that weekend’s football championship of nearly the same name. Four out of 16 entrants walked away from the taste test event with awards.

A team of store support center judges anonymously sampled each entrant’s chili concoction, pitting recipes with names such as Drunken Dragon Fire Chili, Dave's Hot as Cin Chili, Five-Alarm Turkey Chili and Not Dad's Chili against each other. In addition, associates attending the event tasted the chilis and voted for their favorites. Popular votes were tallied to determine the first, second and third prize winners, who received $100, $50 and $25 Winn-Dixie gift cards, respectively.

Margaret DeVero took the blue ribbon judge’s award with Own Brands’ Checkerboard Chili, winning her bragging rights until the next chili cookoff.

In the popular vote, results were as follows:

1stPlace – Aimee Garrow with “Halloween Chili”
2ndPlace – Greg Retz with “Texas Brisket Chili”
3rdPlace – Tina Smith with “John F.’s Chili”
Popular vote participants paid a nominal donation to the We Care Fund, a non-profit organization that assists Bi-Lo Holdings associates in times of need. The event raised $365 for the fund.
