Marci Walker, assistant store director of Winn-Dixie store No. 1537 in Hammond, La., has made the most of her opportunities to excel outside the store and foster Winn-Dixie’s culture of giving back the community.

Walker has been a Winn-Dixie associate in the New Orleans region for 25 years. During that time, she has held positions in nearly every department while keeping a close connection to the community her store serves.

“I enjoy working in the community and seeing our customers outside the store,” she said.

Three years ago, then-district director Karena Niblett presented Walker with a challenge: leading store involvement in Louisiana Earth Day, an annual, large-scale event that celebrates the planet and generates awareness of the measures people should take to preserve it.

“Louisiana Earth Day is an important and high profile event,” Niblett said. “Many stakeholders throughout the state, including Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden, support Louisiana Earth Day. I knew Marci would be collaborating with leaders for this event and I was confident that she would represent Winn-Dixie in a positive way.”

Walker coordinated the details necessary to ensure Winn-Dixie had a strong presence at the event.

“This past year, we partnered with vendors such as Nabisco, Keebler, Lance and Frito-Lay,” she said. “We also offered healthy vegetable snacks for children to enjoy.”

Other activities included a mini garden, where children planted seeds in cups to take home and nourish. Marci estimated that more than 6,000 people visited Winn-Dixie’s area for Louisiana Earth Day.

Previously, Walker worked with community schools on smaller projects. The Louisiana Earth Day project gave Marci an opportunity to get involved with an initiative that impacted multiple stores. “We put a lot of time and effort into this event and we’ve watched it grow throughout the years,” said Marci. “I really appreciate all the associates that volunteered to come out and help with Earth Day. It really is a team effort.”
