The town of Pickens, S.C. celebrated the 30thAnnual Pickens Azalea Festival on April 19, and despite unpleasant weather conditions, BI-LO store No. 5552 was excited to participate in the county’s largest and most anticipated event.

This was the 12thyear that BI-LO has been a part of the festival that celebrates spring in a family-oriented atmosphere. Guests of the festival enjoyed live entertainment on multiple stages, a 5K walk/run, original works of art by local artists, an annual baking competition and delicious local foods.

For the past 12 years, BI-LO has been selling hamburgers, hotdogs and homemade fries, with all proceeds going to Sabrina’s House Charities and the Pickens Fire Department. Similar to the Ronald McDonald House, Sabrina’s House helps families with ill or injured children throughout the Pickens area pay for medical bills and other expenses when their children are undergoing inpatient and outpatient treatment at nearby hospitals. Similarly, the Pickens Fire Department uses funds raised from BI-LO to help families affected by house fires get back on their financial feet.

Store No. 5552 Director Richie Tallman has been raising money for these organizations since he took over as store director nine years ago.

“We are lucky to live in an area where we can come together and have a lot of fun, while supporting one another along the way,” Tallman said. “I make it a point to try and help every organization in the Pickens community.”

Despite the unpleasant weather, associates were able to raise more than $2,000 for the organizations. In addition, the store created five beautiful baking baskets for winners of the baking competition, full of cake mix, spices, flour, oil and baking utensils.
