Riverside Presbyterian Day School second grade students participate in an interactive lesson about product development at the Jacksonville Store Support Center.​

On Jan. 17, a group of 60 eager second grade students from Riverside Presbyterian Day School came to the Bi-Lo Holdings Jacksonville Support Center to learn how our Own Brand products are developed and sent to market.

Own Brands Vice President Wesley Bean explained how innovation impacts the development of an Own Brands product and Creative Manager, Brenna Knotts described the product “discovery phase.” Margaret DeVero, Own Brands innovation manager, led children through a blind taste test using fruit juice as a teaching example. DeVero showed the children how to test the sugar contest and oversaw their hands-on experimentation in food chemistry as they blended their own juices.

“The best activity by far was where we were able to blend our own juices,” a participating student said.

DeVero led the children through taste tests, showed them how to test sugar content and oversaw their hands-on experimentation in food chemistry as they mixed their own juices. Students also got a chance to taste test fruit snack flavors under consideration for the Kuddles brand.

Onsite Account Executive Michael Baumgaertner and Packaging Manager Mary Anne Ericksonexplained the importance of packaging and worked with the students to design a label for the juices they blended. Kristen Overland, Senior Marketing Specialist, described marketing and the students came up with creative advertising ideas.

All students and teachers took home a bag of some popular Winn-Dixie Own Brands products.
