Winn-Dixie stores in central Alabama recently teamed up with Frito-Lay to give shoppers a one-of-a-kind experience while helping local children in need.

Former Alabama running back and 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram made a special appearance March 8 at the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. Through an in-store Frito-Lay promotion, 20 local Winn-Dixie shoppers were selected to participate in the project for the food bank, including a special meet-and-greet with the current New Orleans Saints player.

Ingram, promotion winners and several Winn-Dixie associates packed snacks for the food bank’s Weekend Backpackers Program. The program provides children with easy-to-open, nutritious food to take home over the weekends and holidays, when they otherwise might not have food available. Backpacks are delivered to partner schools each week, where they are discretely distributed to students who need them.

The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama currently serves more than 1,700 children a week in 12 counties throughout the area.

“We have wonderful local partners like Winn-Dixie, who continue to support our efforts and make a difference in our community,” said Brooke McKinley of Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.

During the private event, Ingram also signed autographed items and took pictures with promotion winners.
