As the Official Supermarket of the Florida Gators, Winn-Dixie teamed up with the University of Florida Women’s Gymnastics team to bring hope to patients residing at the American Cancer Society’s Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge in Gainesville, Florida.

Winn-Dixie has a longstanding partnership with the facility, which is dedicated to housing and helping people who are undergoing treatment at nearby medical facilities such as UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital.

The gymnastics team gathered at the lodge Feb. 24 to serve a delicious dinner provided by Winn-Dixie and to visit with patients so they could focus on what’s most important – getting well. Caretakers, patients, family and friends filled their plates with ham, lasagna and salad and chatted with the gymnasts about what they are going through during their treatments and recovery.

Patient Beverly Strange said she has found comfort in the Hope Lodge because it gives her a community that understands what she’s experiencing.

“The support from the Florida gymnastics team was better than any medicine could ever do for the patients of the center,” Strange said.

Gymnast Claire Boyce said it made her want to compete harder.

“We’re doing it for them and we’re doing it for everyone who has breast cancer or any kind of cancer,” Boyce said. “I think it’s a great cause.”
