Throughout the season of giving thanks and traditional feasts, BI-LO and Winn-Dixie teams helped spread the spirit of the holidays by working with community leaders and organizations throughout the Southeast.

From turkey giveaways and food drives to serving and delivering holiday meals, many BI-LO and Winn-Dixie associates helped their neighbors by giving back to those in need.

Associates in the Jacksonville region joined more than 100 residents and caretakers at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Gainesville, Fla. to provide and help serve a Thanksgiving feast. The meal included turkey, sweet potatoes, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and collard greens and helped to raise spirits for people affected by cancer. The region also gave to underprivileged youth and their families of the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation in Jacksonville as Winn-Dixie provided 300 boxes of food filled for hearty Thanksgiving meals.

Winn-Dixie’s Miami region associates spread the giving spirit of the holidays throughout South Florida. Winn-Dixie store No. 291 in Aventura, Fla. and longtime partner, Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank, held a kosher food scavenger hunt to raise more than $3,500 in food donations to feed hungry families during Thanksgiving. Store No. 290 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. partnered with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department to donate 140 turkeys to local families. Additionally, Winn-Dixie Miami Region Vice President Tony Jorges led a team that partnered with community leaders in Hialeah, Homestead and Miami to provide more than 1,500 turkeys to residents in need. That team continued to spread the joy of the holidays on Thanksgiving day as Jorges and a group of associates donated their time to serve hundreds of Latin-inspired holiday meals during the ‘Feed a Friend’ event which benefited homeless people and families in need from Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Hispanic Unity of Florida.

For the second year in a row, BI-LO’s Charleston district partnered with the Charleston Basket Brigade, an organization focused on providing a complete Thanksgiving meal to those in need. BI-LO provided the delivery of all food for the event and a $50,000 donation, which served 3,323 families who have children and could not afford a Thanksgiving meal. The Charleston district also teamed up with the Humanities Foundation, an assistance-housing network, to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to people who could not afford a holiday meal.

Winn-Dixie’s Tampa region embraced the season for giving buy partnering with Harbors of Hope ministries in Lakeland, Community Cooperative in Ft. Myers and Meals on Wheels of Sarasota to assist more than 300 seniors and needy families with turkeys and fixings through several turkey and food donations.

Nine Winn-Dixie stores in Winn-Dixie’s Montgomery region encouraged their customers to embody the holiday spirit during the “Share Your Thanks-by-giving,” food drive in partnership with Feeding the Valley food bank and WTVM News Leader 9. By providing a location to make donations and thanks to the generosity of Winn-Dixie shoppers, the food drive helped raise 5,770 pounds of food to be distributed to those in need.
