Winn-Dixie store No. 283 director Jose Perez has been getting acquainted with his Miami neighbors over the last eight months to identify local community involvement opportunities.

Perez and his community involvement team met to create the store’s first community outreach plan. The initial community launch led to meetings with school officials at Banyan Elementary and Rockway Elementary, which developed school partnerships that offered new experiences for him and his store team.

Perez and his team participated in the store’s first-ever school activities, helping students celebrate Mother’s Day with a Jr. Cake Decorator event and recognizing local educators with a Teacher Appreciation breakfast at Banyan Elementary. Most recently, Perez and his associates welcomed more than 70 attendees from Rockway Elementary School to the store’s first Art Night event on May 29.

“It’s been a tremendous experience to build our first partnerships and feel the appreciation of school staff for our commitment to education,” he said. “Inviting students to share their work and seeing parents’ reactions at our first Art Night has truly helped us build a stronger bond with our community.”

To prepare for his first Art Night, Perez collaborated with the Rockway Elementary School’s PTA and Art Teacher Damaris Rodriguez. Student works were exhibited throughout the store for customers and families to enjoy. Among the attendees that evening was Rockway Elementary School nPrincipal Debbie Saumell.

“We would like to thank Jose for his commitment to Rockway Elementary School and making Winn-Dixie an educational partner for our students and staff,” she said. “Everyone enjoyed our Art Night event and it was great to see the glowing faces as students recognized their artwork.”
