School children check out the first books at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School’s Library unveiling in Greenville, SC.

As a long-time supporter of education for children in Upstate South Carolina, BI-LO Charities joined forces with St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School to replace the school’s 56-year-old building in Greenville, S.C.

With the help of generous contributions from local businesses, corporations and neighbors, the school was able to meet its $5 million goal in less than two years. Bi-Lo Holdings then presented a $200,000 check to the campaign to fund a new school library.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to give Greenville’s children, families and community neighbors the chance to experience the joys of reading and the kinship of a library’s atmosphere,” said Rondel Cuyler, director of public relations, community involvement and charitable giving for BI-LO.

The library received a great number of donated books, as well as funding to purchase new books. Volunteers helped to catalog and shelve the library’s old and new books.

Representatives of Bi-Lo Holdings, Greenville Women Giving, the school advisory board, and other friends were on hand when St Anthony of Padua Catholic School officially opened its library doors Oct. 25.

Librarians welcomed the members of the school’s sixth grade class, who had the opportunity to choose and check out books.
