More than 3,500 Florida residents wait for organ transplants each year, and Central Florida Winn-Dixie associates are continuing to show they care and that they want to help.

Winn-Dixie continued its three-year tradition of support for organ and tissue donation during the 6th Annual GR8 TO DON8 8K and 5K Fun Run/Walk, held March 28 at Lyman High School in Longwood, Florida.

GR8 TO DON8 is the premier organ and tissue donation awareness event in East Central Florida to celebrate those who have received live-saving donations and to honor those who have generously given the “gift of life” through organ and tissue donation. The event also serves to educate the local community about the importance one "yes" can make. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and tissue donors can improve the quality of life for dozens more. Last year, nearly 28,000 lives were saved through the generosity of organ donors.

Winn-Dixie proudly hosted a pre-race spaghetti dinner the evening before the race to fuel runners for the day ahead. During the race, Winn-Dixie also offered water and healthy post-race snacks, including bananas, apples and other delicious foods to replenish the runners along with giveaways at their tent.

“The runners enjoyed the spaghetti dinner and were thankful for the post-race snacks to refuel,” said Eric Dichtas, director at Winn-Dixie store No. 2233. “We were overwhelmed with how great the turnout was for the race events and happy to be involved with such a great organization.”

Proceeds from the race went directly back into the community to educate the 3.8 million people in TransLife’s 10-county service area and encourage them to donate. TransLife, the beneficiary of the race, is East Central Florida’s federally designated organ and tissue donation program and is responsible for increasing awareness and visibility of donation.
