Brevard County Catholic School students built an entryway to the Can-gineering Food Drive with Winn-Dixie’s donated cans.

Winn-Dixie teamed up with Brevard County Catholic Schools to help the less fortunate in their local communities by hosting a Can-gineering Food Drive and Design Competition at Melbourne Central Catholic High School. Winn-Dixie stores Nos. 2268 and 2333 donated 100 cases of canned Own Brand vegetables and beans to the project. The collective student efforts brought in more than 65,000 non-perishable food items to stock local food pantry shelves throughout the nine Brevard County parishes.

A friendly design competition was held between nine Brevard County K-8 schools, with each presenting an original 3-D design created with the cans they collected. The event not only helped provide food for the hungry, but it also challenged students to use their math and science skills to build creative structures from the donated cans. Engineers from Kennedy Space Center, Harris Corporation, Northrop Grumman and Florida Institute of Technology judged the entries, which included a lighthouse, a chalice and a wall of helping hands.Winn-Dixie’s was the largest singular donation received for the event. During the competition, students showed their appreciation to Winn-Dixie for the grocers’ contribution by building an entryway to the event with the donated cans.

“It was a pleasure to help Brevard County Catholic Schools bring their creations to life while helping a cause that Winn-Dixie is so passionate about – feeding the hungry in our local communities,” said District Director Jennifer Short.
