A thoughtful act such as delivery of banana Popsicles to an ailing customer’s family member helped further endear a Winn-Dixie store director to his community.

Winn-Dixie Assistant Store Director Billy Dusterdiek recently demonstrated that commitment to one’s community goes beyond the four walls of the store in which one works.

A frantic customer came to store No. 457 in Dothan, Ala. to make a special purchase for his ailing father, a patient at a nearby hospital. His father was sick to his stomach, but had one specific request – a banana Popsicle.

After a search of the store’s aisles, the customer could not find any. He asked Dusterdiek, who confirmed that the frozen treats were out of stock.

“You could obviously see he was disappointed we didn’t have them,” Dusterdiek said.

Dusterdiek asked the customer which hospital his father was in and for his room number. The customer went back empty-handed to be by his father’s side.

“He told me it was the only thing he could have,” Dusterdiek said. “I said, ‘let me take them to him.’”

Dusterdiek sent his Service Area Manager, Stephen Fleming, to pick up banana popsicles from Winn-Dixie store No. 454, and Dusterdiek personally delivered the popsicles to the customer’s father at the hospital. Since then, both Fleming and Dusterdiek have checked on the patient, and note that he is doing well.

“We would like to thank Billy and Stephen for their acts of kindness and for going above and beyond,” said Kelly Brackin, the sister of the customer. “I cannot explain how much that meant to my entire family.”

Dusterdiek downplayed the act, saying he didn’t think twice before doing the favor for a person in need.“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess that’s the way I am.”
