Students in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia received new school supplies, thanks to area BI-LO stores. More than 30 stores from two districts recently teamed up to donate $38,000 in school supplies to six area counties.

Because of the economy and lack of state funding, many students come to school without the materials they need to study and work. The items BI-LO stores donated -- including notebooks, pencils, calculators and markers --will ensure they have the resources they need to succeed in the classroom.

Store directors began presenting local schools with their new supplies in December, and will continue this month.

A lot of our associates have children, so we understand the constant need in schools to provide supplies,” said Daryl Massey, BI-LO district director for Chattanooga West. “This is a simple way for us to provide students and teachers with the resources that they need to be successful.”

In addition to helping students, free supplies benefit local teachers. Most say it is standard practice for teachers to purchase and supply the resources that their students and classroom need. More support from businesses such as BI-LO means better teacher effectiveness in the classroom.

“We are committed to making our communities better places to live, work, play and learn,” said Rodney Dillard, BI-LO district director for Chattanooga East. “That starts with supporting our local schools and providing students with the things they need to get the best education.”
