Associates from Baton Rouge area Winn-Dixie stores recently joined forces with the Special Olympics for the 34th annual torch run. Nearly 30 associates came out to support the incredible cause.
The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for a variety of Olympic-type sports.¬ Children and adults with intellectual disabilities are given the opportunity to develop physical fitness and demonstrate courage while sharing personal skills and gifts of spirit with their families, as well as fellow Special Olympics athletes and their communities.
Before the Special Olympics Torch Run, Winn-Dixie Baton Rouge district stores realized great success with the March Community Donation Program, raising nearly $40,000 for the organization. Regional leadership, associates and the community teamed up to make an incredible impact to a deserving group.
"I was proud to walk side-by-side with my associates to honor and celebrate people with special needs in this community" said Zach Wesson, Baton Rouge district director. "The Baton Rouge and Lafayette communities supported us with our fundraising efforts, and we were able to represent them by carrying a torch in the Special Olympics."
Each participating store was assigned a quarter-mile segment of the run. Associates lined up and walked with pride to represent Winn-Dixie and the Baton Rouge community.‚Äč
