BI-LO celebrated both tomatoes and golf with events in June.

Tomato soup, tomato bruschetta, fried green tomatoes… we all enjoy them, but never have the opportunity to celebrate them -- until now.

For the past few weeks, BI-LO has been celebrating the tomato in stores with “The Big Fat Juicy Tomato Event.” The Edisto Island BI-LO store took it one step further by partcipating in the Edisto Open Land Trust Tomato Open Golf Tournament June 21.

The Edisto Open Land Trust foundation was established in 1994 and works to preserve lands, scenics vistas, heritage, and conservation resources of Edisto Island. For the 20thanniversary, BI-LO joined forces with the foundation as presenting sponsor of the Edisto Open Land Trust Tomato Open Golf Tournament and Live Auction.

Some 200 diginatires and BI-LO represenatives gathered at the plantation club house for the live auction that featured BI-LO local South Carolina offerings and tomato inspired recipes. The auction items included vacation trips, hunting and fishing excurisions, artwork, weekend getaways and more.

The BI-LO golf team was one of 26 attending the Tomato Open Golf Tournament to raise money for the conservation of the island and to celebrate the tomato. As part of Edisto’s history, the Tomato Open celebrates the thriving tomato industry that once encompassed Edisto and the roots that the tomato industry still has in the area.

“This was a wonderful event to get involved with the Edisto community,” said BI-LO District Director Henry Bash. “This is one local event that everyone really comes together to celebrate the community and to focus on making Edisto even more beautiful than it already is.”

“We are the only grocer on the island, but we still have a commitment to our customers to be the best grocer and to offer them the freshest, high quality products at a convenient location,” said BI-LO Store No. 5742 Director Daniel Bates. The store recently underwent renovations and improvements including a refreshed bakery- deli area, customer service area, new seafood lobster case and more.
