BI-LO store No. 5553 Fresh Area Manager Debbie Jacques speaks to kindergarten students at Merrywood Elementary School in Greenwood, S.C.

Associates from BI-LO store No. 5553 stopped by Merrywood Elementary School in Greenwood, South Carolina to give kindergarten students an opportunity to hear about the inner workings of a grocery store’s bakery department and to learn about baking and more.

Students watched with excitement as Debbie Jacques, fresh area manager, and Eilisa Sibert, deli bakery manager, demonstrated how bakery associates put icing on cupcakes, from start to finish. The associates answered questions from curious students about their favorite sweet treats from BI-LO and what a career in a grocery store’s bakery department is like.

The associates also explained the importance of learning lessons early in life that they will one day apply in real-life careers as adults, such as following instructions and listening to those in charge.

“Our team looks forward to hosting young students from local schools each year,” said Ted Boyd, store director. “The teachers appreciate our time, and it’s a great way to give back to our community, while teaching kids the importance of having direction early in life.”
