BI-LO stores throughout the greater Greenville area kept local high school athletes hydrated through the hot summer months when football practice was in full swing.

Twelve stores in the Greenville West district teamed up with Coca-Cola to collect PowerAde donations at store registers from June through August. Through the promotion, customers donated bottles of PowerAde to support their local high school team, with Coca-Cola matching one case per every 10 donated.

Thanks to the support of customers and Coca-Cola, the district was able to donate 438 cases, or 6,570 bottles with retail value of more than $9,000, to 14 local high school football teams.

“It was fun to rally the store teams and customers around their local schools,” said Randy Ellison, district director. “The summer months can be brutal for players during long practice hours and this was a simple way for us to ensure our local athletes stayed hydrated and ready for the upcoming football season.”

In addition to his store donating 20 cases of the sports drink to the Southside High School football team, store No. 5563 Director Roger Sullivan was asked to speak to the team about setting high goals in life in addition to on the football field.

“As an inner-city school, many of these young men are faced with unique situations and challenges. As an African-American male, I wanted show them how hard work and determination will help them achieve great success,” Sullivan said.
