Winn-Dixie store teams in Boca Raton, Fla., Tamarac, Fla., and Aventura, Fla. joined their Jewish neighbors to celebrate Purim, a cultural holiday commemorating the Jewish community’s narrow escape from destruction in the ancient Persian Empire. The holiday began at sundown on March 15 and lasted through sundown March 16.

The stores joined their communities in celebrating Purim with family-friendly activities, including sending food gifts to friends, providing charitable giving, eating festive meals and wearing colorful costumes.

Store Director Eddie Eisenscher got a head start on celebrating Purim with his Boca Raton, Fla. customers March 12, as he welcomed 75 families from the PJ Library of South Palm Beach County to his store for an evening of fun activities. Along with arts and crafts, young attendees also made their very own Hamantasch, a pastry with a symbolic connection to the holiday.

“We were honored to take part in our neighbor’s Purim celebration as a welcomed member of the community,” Eisenscher said. “The kids had a wonderful time and the praise we received from parents and library staff was very rewarding.”

On March 16, Winn-Dixie store no. 326 Service Area Manager Annie Yusifov and Meshgiah (Kosher Supervisor) Alex Schwartzman joined nearly 600 of their South Florida neighbors during Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El’s Purim 5K Run/Walk with the Rabbi. The event helped raise funds for early childhood and summer camp programs.

“We were thrilled to be a part of such a large Purim celebration that raised funds for a great cause,” said Schwartzman. “We strive to be a neighbor our neighbors can count on and having the opportunity to participate in such a fun, community-focused event gives us the chance to interact with so many of our neighbors outside of the store.”

The Aventura, Fla. community was filled with the joy of Purim as Winn-Dixie store no. 291 Store Director Cory Weissman partnered with Hochberg Preparatory School and Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank to host a Purim celebration and kosher food scavenger hunt. Throughout the afternoon, 50 families donated $1,800 in kosher food products to benefit the food bank and local families in need.

“We were happy to be a part of such a wonderful event that really represents what Purim is all about,” said Weissman. “Being able to provide assistance to our neighbors and watch customers have a great time in the store was an honor.”
