Less than a month after converting 21 Piggly Wiggly stores to the BI-LO banner, BI-LO associates came together to continue a Piggly Wiggly sponsorship that helped feed an estimated 20,000 Charleston, S.C. -area residents in need this Thanksgiving.
To meet that lofty goal, the Charleston Basket Brigade (CBB) sought to raise $100,000 ‚Äď and BI-LO‚Äôs assumption of the event‚Äôs sponsorship helped make that goal a reality for the nonprofit.
With Eastern Region Vice President Rusty Streetman leading the way, BI-LO Associates joined hundreds of other community volunteers on Nov. 26 at the Charleston Area Convention Center to assemble boxes of Thanksgiving meals.
Each family received a box of food to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal, including a 10-12 pound turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, a pumpkin pie, fresh rolls and butter. Inside each box was a note that read, ‚ÄúThis comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.‚ÄĚ
CBB co-founder Pam Hartley told The Moultrie News that organizers were thrilled when BI-LO pledged its support of the event, which had been sponsored by Piggly Wiggly for the past four years.
‚ÄúThe BI-LO partnership is such a crucial part of this effort and we were ecstatic they agreed to jump on board,‚ÄĚ said Hartley. ‚ÄúThey have been so enthusiastic, organized and accommodating. It is evident that BI-LO supports our community and local citizens in need.‚ÄĚ
As a sponsor, BI-LO provided all of the food at cost, saving the organization over $50,000 as well as food shipping costs from two distribution centers to the convention center. Over the past five years, CBB has raised $238,000 and has fed more than 47,000 local residents in need.
