Winn-Dixie store No. 386 joined hundreds of South Florida residents April 26 in the second annual Air and Sea Relay for Life.

In addition to serving as a sponsor of the event, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., store raised donations from associates and customers. Store Director Jason McCullough said his team was able to donate nearly $2,000 to the American Cancer Society, helping raise awareness and provide much-needed services to those affected by the disease.

The unique, beachside community provides a special twist on the traditional fundraising event, combining the usual running and walking with sea-bound divers, swimmers and paddle boarders. McCullough says his store’s participation in the local relay was a great opportunity to further connect with coastal neighbors.

“It’s always an honor to support an organization like the American Cancer Society, especially during such a great community event,” he said. “I would like to thank both my associates and our customers for helping us make our first Relay for Life event a huge success.”

The store team of McCullough, Culinary Manager Isabella Trujillo and Floral Manager Jessica Penso greeted runners as they arrived, providing them with cupcakes from the store’s bakery. Racers were treated to reusable Winn-Dixie bags and coupons as they enjoyed live entertainment throughout the day. The event ended with a Luminaria Ceremony to commemorate cancer survivors and victims.

“We were very excited to have Winn-Dixie join the community as a sponsor of our second annual Air and Sea Relay for Life,” Race Coordinator John Boutin said. “The contributions Jason and his team have made will go a long way in supporting the American Cancer Society’s mission of providing research and services to help eliminate cancer.”
