Winn-Dixie teamed up with two local high schools in Marion County to help them personalize corsages and boutonnieres for their upcoming proms.

Winn-Dixie store No. 2287 in Ocala, Fla, hosted floral arranging classes on April 11 and 12 before prom for the students of Forest High School and Lake Wier High School. Attendees included part-time cashiers and stockers who attend the schools.

More than 20 students took part in the free classes, which was organized for the second year by Floral Associate Sherie Gomez, complete with coffee and donuts as she led the instruction. She created flyers about the classes, which were distributed by student cashiers and baggers to their peers and through their social media accounts. As news about the classes spread through the school hallways, the weekend event turned into several weekends as many of the students from different high schools throughout the Ocala area came to the store to make their own floral creations.

“It was very rewarding to help these young men and women who cared so much about making their proms special,” said Gomez. “I love working with young people to give them experiences that will hopefully impact their lives in a positive way.”

Gomez recently held two other floral arranging classes on Saturday mornings for the Ocala community. She plans to host more floral events for the community, including gift wrapping classes in the store during the holidays.
