On July 12, Winn-Dixie store No. 2355 Store Director Michael Hurst and his team joined the Fort Pierce Police Department for the32nd Annual Chili Cook-off to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of St. Lucie County.

To spice up its inaugural participation in one of the largest community events of the year, Hurst’s store donated the food and refreshments, including the ingredients for the department’s competitive dish: America’s Most Wanted Chili.

Fort Pierce Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Melissa Jacques contacted Hurst with an opportunity to support local service men and women, and he quickly worked with his team to coordinate the items the department needed. Additionally, Hurst and cashier Christina Lincoln sold chili, hot dogs, chips and more to support the police department, with all proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club.

“It meant a lot to join the Fort Pierce Police Department and hundreds of our neighbors at such an impactful community event,” said Hurst. “Being part of such a beloved celebration and interacting with so many of our neighbors made our involvement a huge success.”

To help raise additional needed funds, Hurst and Lincoln took part in a “jail-and-bail activity” throughout the day. A mock cell was featured at the event, and Lincoln was one of the “inmates” who had to raise “bail” to be released.

Sgt. Jacques says the department’s success couldn’t have been attained without Winn-Dixie.

“We can’t thank Winn-Dixie enough for their overwhelming support,” she said. “On top of the donation, having Michael and Christina join us at the event was a wonderful sign of Winn-Dixie’s commitment to the partnership.”
