More than 1,500 Miami area residents gathered in the parking lot at Winn-Dixie store No. 366 Aug. 22 to receive a free assortment of food from Farm Share, an organization that works with local farmers who donate fresh and nutritious food to be distributed to those who need it most.

Winn-Dixie store No. 366 Director Juan Polo joined City of Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez in greeting and assisting event attendees, as well as providing disadvantaged residents with Winn-Dixie gift cards.

Residents of all ages were in line as early as 5 a.m. to receive an assortment of fresh food, including bread, fruits, vegetables and meats. Polo said the large crowd was an indication of increasing need in the area.

“It meant a lot for us to be a part of an initiative that gives food to those less fortunate in our community,” he said. “Everyone from small children to elderly neighbors were on hand, some of whom relied on this event for their next meal, so it was fantastic to be able to work with the commissioner’s office and Farm Share to provide them with a nutritious meal.”

Farm Share is a South Florida-based organization that distributes more than 23 million pounds of healthy, fresh food to more than one million families each year through community events and partner agencies. Commissioner Suarez, who assisted in the coordination and distribution, was thrilled that Winn-Dixie joined the cause to benefit those less fortunate.

“We are grateful Winn-Dixie came out to the event and joined us in making the community a better place,” he said. “It’s extremely heartening to know the City of Miami and its residents can count on our corporate neighbors in times of need.”
