Nearly 400 people helped raise more than $11,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) through the Myrtle Beach 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes, a five-kilometer walk on Sept. 28 at Pelican Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

BI-LO No. 5104 worked with vendor partners to provide lunch in the baseball stadium’s outfield for the walkers after theevent.

“The money raised helps provide medical equipment and even special service dogs that can sense when a child’s blood sugar is dropping too low,” said Peter Allston, co-manager of BI-LO No. 5104.

Allston and the store’s acting co-manager, Chip Spoonts, worked with vendors Frito-Lay and Dietz & Watson in providing lunch for the participants. A new item introduced to walkers this year was Chek cola. The charity walk’s participants worked up a healthy appetite walking around the baseball diamond’s perimeter.

“People really liked the Chek drinks. It was a new product for them because this was the first year BI-LO was a sponsor,” said Allston.

“Next year is going to be bigger and better,” he said. “We’ll put together a team of BI-LO associates from all the area stores to participate in the walk.”
