David Welch says that in his more than 47 years at Winn-Dixie and Bi-Lo Holdings, he never thought he’d be where he is today. Welch, director of business support was recently elected chairman of the board for the National Frozen and Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA) at the organization’s Annual Membership Meeting and Luncheon Oct. 10 in Orlando, Florida.

The NFRA is a unique, all-industry trade association, representing the interests of every segment of the frozen and refrigerated foods industry. Through NFRA consumer outreach programs, the association helps retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, brokers and others come together to create programs to grow awareness and sales of frozen foods and refrigerated dairy products in the United States.

“I am very excited to be given this opportunity to further my passion for the refrigerated and frozen foods industry,” Welch said. “It is a great honor to be able to network with key suppliers and to be a part of building stronger business relationships within the industry.”

Welch began work for Bi-Lo Holdings nearly five decades ago at a Winn-Dixie store. Over the years, he has served in several roles, including director of dairy and frozen foods, senior category manager for dairy, district director and grocery buyer. Welch credits his peers and coworkers for his success and he says victories can be achieved through respecting others and a willingness to learn from everyone.

“Over the years, I have always tried to keep in mind not to let the obstacles, which are sure to come while working in the retail industry, dampen my passion and spirit,” Welch said. “And, being surrounded by supportive people has truly helped me get where I am today.”

In his new role, Welch will continue to promote the mission of the NFRA by educating and increasing consumer awareness of the benefits and quality offerings of the many products available in frozen and refrigerated foods. He served as vice chairman-refrigerated from 2011 to 2012, as secretary from 2012 to 2013 and as chairman-elect from 2013 to 2014.

Welch is also a recipient of the Honorable Order of Golden Penguins, which is an award the NFRA presents three times a year to people who develop a successful program that combines innovative marketing campaigns with creative merchandising displays.

“Throughout all of my accomplishments, what I value most is being able to look forward to work every day,” Welch said.
